What is the Best "Value" Cue?

12/1/2013

There's the old saying that its not the equipment, but the player. That said, most would agree that playing with the blunt end of a broomstick would level the playing field to some extent. So what is the bare minimum equipment wise, for a player to get the job done?

What is the bare minimum to get the job done?

One step up from the broom stick is often the house cue. This could work for many people, and it worked for me for a long time. From my experience, however, there is a great deal of inconsistency from house cue to cue. If you always play at the same place, you might have old sally that works just fine-- until the day someone else is playing with it and you have to go to your #2 cue, old betty, then your #3...

Enter the "Value" cue

The value cue is the cue that performs at the bare minimum, but also allows for that consistency that swapping cues can't provide. What I look for:
  • Solid Hit
  • Nice Balance
  • Aesthetics
Anything beyond that is a plus. Obviously the best bang for the buck means something different to everyone. And there are definitely different tiers, $50-100, $100-200, $200+, $500+...

One of my favorite cues is the Players sneaky pete. I bought it from a friend long ago, and I love the consistency, balance, and "utility," it provides. Its definitely not a low deflection shaft, but its nothing too challenging to adapt to. Here is a link below, its about $60 bucks more or less:
