One step up from the broom stick is often the house cue. This could work for many people, and it worked for me for a long time. From my experience, however, there is a great deal of inconsistency from house cue to cue. If you always play at the same place, you might have old sally that works just fine-- until the day someone else is playing with it and you have to go to your #2 cue, old betty, then your #3...
Enter the "Value" cue
The value cue is the cue that performs at the bare minimum, but also allows for that consistency that swapping cues can't provide. What I look for:
